Tartuca

Siena, Italy
(Scrap Metal 2018)

In a beautiful private hilltop home in the hills outside Siena stands 'Tartuca', emblematic of the Tartuca contrada. Tartuca is one of the seventeen contradas that make up Siena, all of which come out in force for the famous Palio di Siena horse race.

Sculpted from scrap metal, galvanized and then coated in a bronze finish, the piece showcases James' distinctive style. One of James' first international sculptures, this huge tortoise, approximately 9ft long, has a friendly presence. The sculpture serves as a representation of Siena's rich culture, bridging tradition and contemporary art in the heart of the Tuscan landscape.
