Brown Bear

Somerset, UK

(Scrap Metal 2024)

This 3/4 life-sized brown bear sculpture stands on the edge of Exmoor National Park, overlooking the Somerset hills. The sculpture depicts a bear balancing on its hind legs in an inquisitive pose.

Constructed from recycled scrap metal, the sculpture has a deliberately weathered appearance. This effect is achieved through a specific finishing process: galvanized metal is coated with a mixture of rust-colored paint and welding dust. The result balances James' creative expression through the use of recycled material and the realistic form and character of the brown bear.
